Acer palmatum
Japanese Maple
Oakland, CA
May, 2011

  • This Maple wants to be huge and puts out two to three foot long sprouts twice a year
  • It is planted much too close to the house so it is constantly pruned back away from the structure
  • It needs regular, twice yearly maintenance which takes about 2-2 1/2 hours each session
  • Despite the vigorous explosion of growth and constant need to releader the top to avoid unsightly knuckles and scars, I am always happy with the light and airy feeling of the leaves, as well as the dynamic tier structure of the branches when I am finished
