Cercis occidentalis
Western Redbud
Oakland, CA
January, 2015
- Pruned in winter silhouette to accentuate beautiful, wavy, gesturing branches
- Branches were thinned in order to showcase clusters of pink flowers in spring and allow space for the graceful effect of its large, fluttering leaves in summer
- This tree is too fragile to climb effectively, so pole pruners were carefully used to reach some of the higher branches (about 18' tall)
- I am expecting it to react by sending out water sprouts from the larger wounds, but in my experience they do not react too strongly to pruning and other than sprout removal and light shaping it probably won't need much work for another two to three years
